About this artwork
Estamos de siesta (We’re Taking a Nap) is a two-piece series created through transfer and mixed media on wood that explores the experience of being perpetually out of sync with time. The work presents a familiar yet surreal scene: Pikachu, a symbol of constant energy and optimism, stands outside a closed storefront, waiting in a moment of unexpected frustration. Inspired by my observations of Spanish business hours and the cultural rhythm of the siesta, the piece transforms a simple everyday encounter—the inability to access a place or service when everything is closed—into a reflection on time, expectation, and cultural difference. By placing a globally recognized character in a moment of quiet disappointment, Estamos de siesta creates a humorous contrast between movement and stillness, enthusiasm and interruption. The wooden surface and mixed-media process add a tactile dimension, bridging contemporary popular culture with a more traditional artistic language while inviting viewers to reflect on the small moments when our personal rhythms collide with those of society.
