About this artwork
Made with real sand from a favourite beach in Portugal, in this painting, ‘A cracked hourglass’, I wanted to invite you to think about the fragility of time and how easily it slips away. An hourglass suggests that time is running out or not waiting for us, reminding us that life is fleeting and each moment is delicate. But when it’s cracked, the sand will pour out and stop moving. It is perhaps a disruption in the natural flow of things, something unexpected or tragic, symbolising a loss, missed opportunity, or coming to a crossroad in your journey. It’s a powerful moment when we feel that time stands still - we could feel both urgency and imperfection. But maybe it could also feel like we don’t need to chase time anymore and just enjoy the moment we are in…

About the artist
Vered Brett is an abstract artist living in Cascais, Portugal. Vered’s art explores the depth, complexity and multiple layers of the stories and memories we carry with us throughout life. Her paintings invite the viewer to dive deep into hidden and unknown moments, peel the layers, and embrace self-acceptance and truth. The proximity to the ocean throughout her life is integral to her work and it is reflected in the choice of tools, textures and colours that she borrows from it. She uses water as a main medium to allow free flow of paint, creating soft borderlines and unpredictable marks. Her intuitive process is free from rules and liberating. Vered hopes to inspire viewers to feel fearless, free and vulnerable through her art.
