About this artwork
“To Be Understood” is a mixed media artwork featuring a sheer fabric painted with acrylics, oil, soft pastels, and pencils, hand-stretched on wooden bars, with a unique backprint on paper attached, integrating transparency and material interaction. This artwork delves into the reservoir of memories, emotions, desires, and experiences stored in our subconscious, while also reflecting the universal desire to find understanding, through an intimate act of discovery. We all seem to crave someone who can truly see and understand us, while we all try to decipher ourselves. Inspired by Freud’s theory that our encounters are rooted in the subconscious, the artwork explores the profound connections we feel with others who resonate with our subconscious makeup. Through see-through screen paintings, the piece captures this subconscious resonance, with fabrics mirroring unique prints on paper, creating a new perception that reflects recognition and exploration of the psyche.

About the artist
As a multidisciplinary artist and documentary filmmaker, I’ve always been attracted to the inner landscapes of human beings, exploring themes of cultural hybridity, psychology, and spirituality. Having lived among complex and conflictual worlds, my work reflects diverse cultural influences and a personal exploration of identity, belonging and freedom. My paintings are characterised by bold and vibrant colour choices, employing multiple media and materials, like the diverse fabrics of societies I inhabit. As a result of this identity tapestry, I became interested in the transcendental, and how we can arrive from the material to the immaterial, where perhaps we can find more things in common than the conflictual realities we live in.
