Oil on linen. Based on paintings I made during the Brucebo Residency in Visby, Sweden, I revisited the subject during the Covid lockdown. The subject is actually a cave on the Brucebo property that was used by people in the Stone Age. Standing in this cave and looking out, I was struck by this space, thinking about a person,7000 years ago looking out of this ancient view or ‘window’. I thought about the threshold between inside and outside, internal and external. Currently this painting has renewed relevance for me as social divisions proliferate and self expression is risky. I believe in discourse and I believe in peace but I also realize, if I am a critical thinker, I should keep my thoughts to myself, besides, I don’t really know anything, anyway.
