About this artwork
The small town of Warfield, BC nestled in the Kootenays. This is a working class town constructed built by workers of Teck Cominco, a terrifying industrial project that produces lead, zinc, fertilizers and acids. After over a century of activity, the landscape in the region has suffered from the poison and so do the bodies of the people who live there. Even now, workers undergo routine liver tests to check for lead and other toxins. The fish in the Columbia River are not fit to eat. I wanted to paint this town because of this story underneath what looks like an idyllic place. Heavy water produced here was used in the Manhattan Project.
