About this artwork
“Colonized” is from a series entitled “The Filmic Eye”, which examines characterization and the narrative structures of film and television. This painting indulges its dramatic source, a 1950s Martian Sci-Fi film, a little differently than others from the series. Here, overprocessed film effects are pushed to absurdity with the application of May Morris’ wallpaper design. “Colonized” questions how delightful patterning can reposition narrative forces, how ‘dominant’ visual tropes function against ‘weaker’ ones. It is also a comment on terrestrial colonization as seen during space race era Hollywood.
