Floral references are often found in my work, with the Moonflower being particularly fascinating. Rather than painting the flower literally, I'm captivated by its growth. Blooming at dusk and lasting only one night, the Moonflower symbolizes resilience and hope in dark times. My flowers are always bright and lifelike, though they often combine elements from various species, much like I am a blend of different cultures. A recent DNA test revealed my ancestry includes people I know little about, who journeyed to Barbados, Antigua, and London—some of whom didn't survive the voyage. At the bottom of the sea, my flowers are intertwined with the remnants of chains, embodying the beauty and pain of my heritage. I aim for the metal and organic elements to sing in harmony. This piece is part of an ongoing collection exploring these themes.
