About this artwork
Self Soothe represents the depth of feeling associated with overcoming tribulations of life on your own. At the end of the day, we are all we have. No one else can make you happy, you must find happiness and peace within yourself. This is one of the hardest life lessons to learn, and one of the toughest to implement. Our anonymous female figure crouches in the fetal position. There are obvious associations with this pose, as well as the idea of protecting our vital organs from lethal attack in some scenarios. We see our figure with wings, to represent the angelic and otherworldly qualities she has - a reminder that objective viewers may view us differently, and often more brilliantly, than our misery allows us to see ourselves at times. She hugs herself, digging into her shoulder/wing with her hand, which has transformed into an unnatural claw, viscerally showing our viewers the pressure each finger exerts on her own body. This is not an easy path. Her hair is catching fire and the environment is chaotic and bright, yet our figure remains smooth and soft. Soothing oneself amidst lifes uncertainties is not easy, but it is often the only path, and once we get through this period, we emerge stronger and better, much like a Phoenix burning themselves to be reborn again.
