About this artwork
“Momento Manifesto” is the combination of my old artistic process as a former graphic designer, formatting an artwork to fit the guidelines of a communicative poster, and embedding my photographic, writing, and newly learned drawing techniques. The birth of this project arose from this blend. The process of this interdisciplinary work was built on planning and spontaneity. As an artist, I wanted to retain the spontaneous aspect of letting myself feel, so I began sketching until I created the two figures you see here. It was self-reflective, in terms of the whirlwind of my current chapter of life as a human, trying to understand life, the universe, myself, my loss, my growth, my wants, and my needs. In this perplexing creation of a drawing, I explored interdisciplinary techniques. I wanted to think of ways to combine aspects of photography, graphic design, and writing—three different disciplines within the art foundation. Different yet interconnected due to their communicative manner. I photographed my drawing from various angles and began photographic manipulation with Photoshop and Capture One Pro to create a digital canvas/poster. By blending in many photos of my artwork, I was able to obtain this detailed extension of my original drawing for this project. Then, as a photographer, I wanted to play with the effect of blurring an “image” (my drawing) so that I could add certain details with ink, charcoal, and graphite when I printed this version of my artwork. I also experimented with the brightness, contrast, and leveling of my drawing for reprinting purposes to match the level of control I wanted, as we do when editing a photograph. Lastly, after printing and adding my physical graphite, charcoal, and ink additions, I wrote a manifesto of where I was in life on the poster/canvas. Using prose and poetry aspects of my writer side, I created the manifesto that you’ll see on this rolled canvas print.

About the artist
Maii, a socially anxious artist, has traversed a tumultuous journey through life, marked by numerous losses, moments of profound self-reflection, and overwhelming grief. These experiences have shaped their perspective, leaving them perplexed by the intricate workings of society and its often bewildering norms. Yet, amidst the chaos, Maii harbours a burning desire to express their enigmatic and distinctive nature through their art and personality. As the seasons change, Maii finds themselves grappling with the weight of seasonal depression, which casts a somber hue over their world. The gloomy atmosphere becomes a constant companion, seeping into their thoughts and coloring their artistic creations. However, rather than succumbing to the darkness, Maii harnesses it as a wellspring of inspiration, channelling their emotions onto the canvas with raw intensity. Drawing inspiration from the works of renowned artists such as Banksy, Picasso, and Basquiat, Maii's artistic style emerges as a mesmerizing blend of semi-figurative elements. Their pieces often feature distorted human forms, capturing the essence of the human condition and the complexities of the mind. Through their art, they seek to unravel the enigma of existence, inviting viewers to delve into the depths of their own emotions and introspection. Maii's semi-figurative style allows them to strike a delicate balance between abstraction and representation. They skillfully use lines, shapes, and colors to convey the essence of their emotive essence, blurring the boundaries between reality and imagination. Their figures, though recognizable, possess an otherworldly quality, as if they exist in a realm beyond the tangible. In their quest to express their distinctive nature, Maii's art becomes a reflection of their own inner world. Each stroke of the brush or pencil is imbued with their emotion, creating a visual language that speaks volumes about their experiences and struggles. Through their art, they find solace and a means to communicate their deepest thoughts and feelings, transcending the limitations of their social anxiety.
