“Race to the precipice” was first conceptualized as a digitally painted piece. The painting explores in a somewhat humorous way the inherent nature of humans to lead themselves towards their own demise. I found inspiration in French romantic painters like Delacroix and Géricault. “The raft of the Medusa '' being the main inspiration behind my piece both in its subject of despair and in its composition. It seemed difficult to see the impact of such composition on screen. It’s a crowded scene and I felt it would be most appreciated as a large scale piece, like Géricault’s work. That was the moment I decided to render it in oils and do it justice

Believe it or not
I almost stopped working on this painting. After two months of relentless work , I felt like it was going nowhere , something felt missing . I put the painting away for nearly 7 months. When I came back to it I knew exactly how to complete it. The jockey in the front right, with the head in the grass, was a last touch that sealed the completion of the piece.
