About this artwork
My “highway” paintings explore the sensations and perceptions of travelling through landscapes, being immersed in a rushing of getting from here to there but also of continuously encountering the sublime. I’m thinking of Canadian poet Earle Birney’s protagonist who is overwhelmed by “a mountain/so big his mind slowed when he looked at it.” oil on canvas

About the artist
Neil McClelland is a Canadian painter whose work focuses on human relationships to nature and the cosmos. Originally from Quebec, Neil lives and works in British Columbia where he received his MFA from the University of Victoria in 2014. He is a 2016 and 2020 grantee of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation. His solo exhibitions include Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre, Medicine Hat, AB; Winchester Galleries, Victoria, BC; Wallack Galleries, Ottawa, ON; Comox Valley Art Gallery, Courtenay, BC; Deluge Contemporary Art, Victoria, BC; Vernon Public Art Gallery, Vernon, BC. Neil’s paintings are in collections including the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and the Colart Collection. He teaches fine arts at The University of Victoria, Thompson Rivers University, and The Vancouver Island School of Art.
