Acrylic on cardboard This piece is from a show I was in called- Think it Over Potential: This is 5 year old me at my cousin’s wedding in Holywood, Northern Ireland. I remember feeling so special in my fancy dress. Getting to hang out with my older cousins was such a thrill for me as I was by far the youngest in the Mawhinney clan. Looking into those eyes, I see a little girl dreaming of her next cream filled donut from Bell’s bakery and wondering what her next adventure will be. She doesn’t know it yet, but she is filled to the brim with so much potential.

From her animal portraits to her autobiographical work referencing old family slides to her colour infused abstract landscapes… van Gruen is happy to play with multiple subject matters in her art practice. She strives to create a personal relationship between her artwork and her audience, with the ultimate goal of evoking a feeling of intimacy and nostalgia. Using intricate brushwork and an expansive colour palette, she works to express her connections with her subject matter, to tell a story. Alli lives in Whistler, BC with her family and dog Bea. Her work can be found in Whistler and in many private collections in Canada and Europe.
