About this artwork
“The Snowball Effect” is a drawing from the ritualistic series “Periscope” ongoing since 2019. A visual diary of moments. This is the story of an unusual day, in spring 2024, in which a surprise snow storm fell in Zurich, Switzerland, where I reside. “The Snowball Effect”, as each drawing in this series, is a snapshot of symbols, fantasies, dreams, or impressions of reality or the media that are present that day, at that moment. Expressed in a small paper frame, through thin black lines and watercolors. The name “Periscope” comes from the symbolic “eye" that sticks out to take a look at what’s going on out there on the surface. Each drawing is an open platform for you, the viewer. To be interpreted through the lens of your own experiences, stories, fantasies or realities converging at a particular moment in time. In this ritualistic series I always follow the same sequence: a written text in the back, my signature and date, then the drawing in the front. All drawings are made using the same technique and, except a few exceptions, using the same paper size.

About the artist
Alicia Velázquez's work explores intimacy and belonging, aspects of time, and the convergence of internal and external realities using a fluid variety of media. Her ritualistic performances and installations act as scaffolds where humans, objects, lines, and colors are invited to construct and experience moments of togetherness. With a recurrent inquiry of her and others’ timely identity, Alicia performs ritualistic, years-long repetitive actions often woven within her personal, intimate routines. Alicia studied architecture in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. After graduating she works and lives in New York City (4 years), Amsterdam (7 years), Barcelona (1.5 years), and Madrid (3 years) before moving to Zurich in 2013. As an independent designer Alicia works across cultures, teams, disciplines and media, including graphic design, scenography, interiors and installations. In 2015 she receives an Adapt-r Marie Curie European grant for a residency period in Brussels (1,5 years), during which she develops her first performances.
