About this artwork
Archival ink touch-liner and watercolor on acid-free paper. This drawing belongs to a ritualistic series named Periscope, ongoing since 2019. Periscope is a journal of daily life moments. Each drawing depicts the embodied narrative of a particular moment in time. The ritual starts with a written text in the back followed by my artist signature and date. I then turn the paper around and let the lines and colors intuitively flow. As curator Beatrice Fontana writes about this series: “The result is a collection of fascinating little details, anthropomorphic forms and fantastical figures, ethereal yet with a tenacious physicality. Dreamlike dimensions that confront text-thoughts and multiply voices, generating a bold chorality. A miniature snapshot of a colorful and pensive collective, portrayed with its human cargo of thoughts and dreams.” Different curated selections of the series Periscope have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions, in Zurich and in Madrid. They are also part of numerous private collections.

About the artist
Alicia Velázquez's work explores intimacy and belonging, aspects of time, and the convergence of internal and external realities using a fluid variety of media. Her ritualistic performances and installations act as scaffolds where humans, objects, lines, and colors are invited to construct and experience moments of togetherness. With a recurrent inquiry of her and others’ timely identity, Alicia performs ritualistic, years-long repetitive actions often woven within her personal, intimate routines. Alicia studied architecture in the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. After graduating she works and lives in New York City (4 years), Amsterdam (7 years), Barcelona (1.5 years), and Madrid (3 years) before moving to Zurich in 2013. As an independent designer Alicia works across cultures, teams, disciplines and media, including graphic design, scenography, interiors and installations. In 2015 she receives an Adapt-r Marie Curie European grant for a residency period in Brussels (1,5 years), during which she develops her first performances.
