About this artwork
'Working Group No. 4' is one of a series of small scale (15 cm x 15 cm) paintings on aluminium. These paintings can be attached directly to the wall using, for example, adhesive pads, or framed, or they can simply be propped. Signed and dated on reverse. An important component of my practice over the last few years has been producing small scale paintings on aluminium, which I began making during the first lockdown in 2020. At that time, my available ‘studio space’ consisted of the kitchen table at home, which also still served its primary purpose of being the place where we sat down for meals 3 times a day. What began spontaneously in reaction to the Corona lockdown, enabling me to work on multiple paintings simultaneously within a significantly confined area, quickly took on a life of its own as new 10 cm x 15 cm and 15 cm x 15 cm images proliferated. Some of these were developed into series, while others have remained as one-offs. Many of these paintings have been (or will be) exhibited at various times under the title '100 Paintings'. The configuration of '100 Paintings' is not fixed, and a new constellation of the work is presented each time it is exhibited.

About the artist
My current work explores the relationships between our everyday environment (architecture, digital media, etc.) and the history of (abstract) painting. I am concerned with how these different areas intersect, and the ways in which we inhabit, navigate, and experience both real and virtual spaces. My paintings incorporate elements of common structures, objects, and images, found in industrial, public, corporate or online spaces, environments which we pass by or through on a daily basis, either virtually or in reality. I completed my MA at the Royal College of Art in London in 2000, and since then have worked in a variety of media, including photography, video, installation, text, and sound. In recent years I have primarily focused on painting and drawing, being concerned with the tension inherent between traditional analogue media and new digital technology. Following a year doing an artists’ residency in Zürich, Switzerland in 2005, I continued living and working there until in summer 2019 relocating to Lüneburg, Germany where I now live and work.
