Oil painting on 160 gsm matte paper In this painting, the feeling of being different in society and trying to belong is represented. The white strokes represent various elements of society that, although unique, seem to fit together and become uniform. However, there is an element that, no matter how hard it tries, cannot help but stand out from the others (the black element). This creates a distance and a loneliness in relation to the others, almost as if it should not be there, as if it does not belong in the same picture. The strokes resemble the marks prisoners make on the walls to count the days of captivity, a metaphor for the prison of constantly limiting and nullifying ourselves just to try to belong and be like everyone else. The painting can come with a printed passe-partout featuring the poem I wrote for this piece, thereby deepening its interpretation. “Ser diferente é procurar a diferença das semelhanças. Tentar não se fazer notar mas dançar no ritmo de outra dança. Tentar calar a sua essência até esta ser uma lembrança. Tentar se encaixar é a sua esperança.”
