About this artwork

A Recollection of “Your and my garden” This piece was one of the pieces exhibited under the title “Your and my garden”. At that time, I had moved from Tokyo to the countryside. The place I moved to was a dilapidated single-story house surrounded by rice fields. I tried to repair the house and do my studio there. I removed the tatami mats from the building, removed woods that had rotted from rainwater, installed new woods, and rebuilt the floors. I also scraped off the dirt on the surface of the building's pillars and applied new plaster to the interior walls, tried to breathe new life into the building. Thinking back now, I think I was looking for a place to call my own in a quiet, open place rich in nature, far from the cramped and noisy city of Tokyo. Although I was repairing the building at the same time, Major changes in environment due to moving made me feel like I was taking part in a residency in a foreign land, and it gave me the opportunity to reconsider the relationship between my work and its viewers. At the time, I was moving away from the crowded city center, but I was also looking to connect with people through my work. "Your and my garden" was an exhibition with the theme of sharing the state of the place where I live and my own way of life with outside viewers in the form of an exhibition, and making it a place to meet new people. The works exhibited were a performance work, a relational work, and these drawings. I drew flowers blooming in the neighborhood of my house. Grass and trees grew haphazardly around the house, and various kinds of wildflowers are blooming there, most of which I didn't know the names of. I wanted to pick those flowers and create a work like that I could gift in the hearts of viewers with a simple feeling. Looking back at that time, I think I wanted to be a sower. I wanted to create a garden of the heart that would be born through my artwork with others from different times and places in “Your and my garden”.
