About this artwork
Contrary to the traditional painting approach of adding paint to create a form, Lancelot Blondeel builds relief by concentrating material in certain points on the canvas. This technique developped in the “No Reason” series highlights the gestural element of the artist’s practice, which favors curved lines and vivid colors. The preparation of the canvas, as well as the selection of colors, is a rigorous and carefully planned process. In contrast, the resulting form is the outcome of a spontaneous movement, drawn in just a few moments; the near-instantaneity of the gesture stands in opposition to the permanence of the canvas.

About the artist
Lancelot Blondeel is a contemporary painter born in 1988. Trained as an engineer, he currently works in Fontenay-sous-Bois, near Paris. The artist develops a gestural approach, conceiving painting in relation to movement. His work produces a memory of the gesture, leaving imprints and furrows on the surface. These traces and signs are revealed through the combination of complementary materials: transparent substances, paper, or cotton canvas. Granting an important role to the circulation of light through his works, the artist questions the way reality becomes visible, exploring the mechanics of the senses and perception.
