"Homemaker" Fabric samples for window treatments, portions of acrylic paintings on canvas, acrylic on raw canvas This work is from my "Checkerboard is so in right now" series. Each work in the series has its own individual title and focus but I like this overarching idea of checkerboard being “on trend” and the phrase nods to the funny relationship between fine art and interior design. The checkerboard (and notions of the grid in general) carries such loaded history and can be seen throughout contemporary work as well, one example being recent works by Rebecca Morris. My pieces are composed of materials in my path and experiences building and designing our home last year and the basic components of making a typical stretched canvas such as stretcher keys and picture wire. Just as I started using interior white paint samples along the edges of all my strips in my Stabilize series (after being the designer for our homes as I’ve moved a lot the last few years, and knowing nearly every version of white made by Benjamin Moore), I'm now looking to my leftover marble tiles, swatches of fabric for window treatments, and as always, my own work dismantled, cut apart and made new. I'm intrigued by the layering effect of gestural marks, the solid grid, and how to make subtle moves to push and pull between this interaction. I’

About the artist
American B. 1982. Veronica Bruce Woodward is an interdisciplinary artist based in the north suburbs of Chicago. She received her BFA in Art Education in 2004 from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. She taught high school art full time from 2004-2011. In 2011, she received her MFA in Painting from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She has been awarded artist residences at Threewalls, Chicago, Bundanon Trust, New South Wales in Australia, and Nida Art Colony in Nida, Lithuania. Woodward has exhibited her work in Chicago, San Diego, Dallas, Miami, Philadelphia and the UK. From 2011-2019, Veronica spent years teaching at some of the top institutions in Illinois such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools as well as taking years off to focus on her art practice and projects. Veronica moved to San Diego in the summer of 2019 where she had two solo exhibitions (Sparks Gallery and Encinitas City Hall) as well as having work included in a group exhibition in Encinitas. She recently moved back to Chicago-land in the summer of 2022 with her husband and two young boys.
