About this artwork
Lee creates his third abstract series, I Eat Colour and Talk in Shapes, to liberate organic shapes to conversate through colour. Finding ways to push abnormality to become an orderly form, Lee brings forth the concept of complex simplicities and places focus on its reductive measures. He balances satisfaction and discomfort to visually stimulate the human sensory to shift one's perspective of conventional compositions. Furthermore, by allowing each canvas to express its own identity, Lee separates himself to guide each work to develop flat dimensioned shapes to solidify the concept of using colour to force perspective. Lacking shadows to fabricate dimension, Lee playfully constructs depth by painting warm and cold tones to come forward and set back on a canvas.

About the artist
Originally from Seoul, South Korea, Joon moved to Vancouver in May 2000. His pursuit of experimenting in the arts grows as he explores various mediums from film photography to hand-cut collaging to large scale paintings, using acrylics and oils. “A means to document my existence, not only to record but to prove my time here in the 21st century, is the fundamental reason why I create. While maintaining the stirring, primitive instinct to arrange colour, rhythm, and form in ties to my past and the present, I seek to develop formal relation to expose the anomaly behind the social construct between conventional and abnormal beauty. Though art analyzes its form into intellectual terms (balance, measure, rhythm, and harmony), I create to translate logical thought to feeling, a sense, a mood. Art is here to break the illusion of function and societal norms that demand the very definition of reality.”
