About the artist
Marc Lüders has been incorporating elements of painting into photographs of real landscapes and urban scenes since the mid-nineties. Individuals are seen at construction sites, in green spaces or on empty lots, or near remnants of the Berlin Wall: lost in thought and impassive, they find themselves in anonymous surroundings, looking as if they have been transported to another world. It is often the case that it is only at second glance that the viewer realizes the scene has been painted over. In this way, Lüders combines different levels of reality and calls attention to the dialectic tension between opposing traits of painting and photography: subjective expression versus objective representation.
