Lauren Coullard’s pictorial practice channels a multitude of characters in polychrome environments, like so many quotes from authors and eras that captivate her. Her polymorphic style comes from the multiple sources that telescope in her collages and paintings. The diversity of her supports – wood, canvas, foam, hand stretched frames, cereal packets – contributes to this dynamic. She borrows techniques from symbolism, romanticism, abstract expressionism and post-modernism. Her iconographic material is arranged in her collages which correspond to the preliminary phase of her paintings, mixing re-photocopied images and plasticized scraps, constituting the „black box“ of the studio. It is from there that she associates mythological and neo-medieval references with futuristic comics and mangas, converging towards the creation of hybrid (super)-heroines. ⸺ Lila Torquéo
