Her clothing is humble, a suggestion of the protagonists life before arriving in Canada. Okra is a significant crop, as it is believed that enslaved people brought seeds with them from Western Africa to the Americas. Here, Mrs. Pipkin has four individual seeds, paying tribute to her children in the U.S.
