This inkjet print (Edition of 3 + 2AP) is from my series Mining For Some Sort of Continuity. A study of the fleeting nature of memories, this series focuses on how personal archives construct a mobile, personal, and ephemeral archive that is fundamental to the construction of diasporic identities. This work features a family photo taken on my mom’s 23rd birthday. An acrylic transfer onto a corroded steel plate, the diptych of my mom posing for a photo with her two friends has been almost completely abstracted by the rust of the material. Small hints of a birthday celebration are revealed in the image: balloons, flowers, a cup, a bottle of wine, bits of cake. Like other pieces from this series where I am using archival family photos, this piece works as a visual reminder of the family gatherings and milestones that I wasn’t able to enjoy with my extended family post-immigration to Canada.
