About this artwork
Estimated Value: $280 - $300 These prints, based on the original paintings, are crafted as one-out-of-one edition prints using Hahnemuhle German Etching, encased in archival sleeves with foam stiffeners. They offer an accessible entry point into the profound visual and conceptual world of Yip's creations, embodying the ethereal and corporeal facets of the originals. Kyle Yip's visual art emerges from the depths of his vivid dreams, mediating an intricate dialogue that transcends binary language. Inspired by Jungian dream theory and Mandukya Upanishad scriptures, his transdisciplinary approach effectively merges Gestalt dream interpretation with art analysis. Yip coterminously reverse engineers these successive images that once appeared immaterial into tactile, obdurate objects that oscillate between abstraction and representation. Drawing from the colour field of pop physics, these 'Dream Artifacts' embody the ethereal and corporeal, bridging the physiological fact of the dream with the fact of the surface. These primordial images navigate the metaphysical ambiguity of personal and collective identity through Eastern and Western philosophies. The resulting serialized paintings are simultaneously abstract and representational in mode, commercial and personal in facture. Yip's avant-gardest aesthetic elucidates the unconscious, inviting viewers to meditate on his art to decipher its rich visual code and agency.

About the artist
Kyle Yip (b. 1988, Scarborough, Canada) is an acclaimed Toronto-based artist whose multidisciplinary practice merges visual art, electronic music, film, and haute couture fashion. Recognized for hypersurrealist creations emerging from dreams, Yip's 'Dream Pieces' act as portals into conscious and subconscious realms, interweaving personal and collective cultural histories. Symbols, like the American flag, probe themes of nationalism, cultural symbolism, and identity. Yip's practice interrogates universal norms by exploring repetition and Western society's obsession with self-image, self-improvement, and social status. A JUNO Award-nominated artist, Yip studied animation at Sheridan College and sculpture at OCAD University. His works, exhibited in New York, London, South Korea, and Venice, invite reflexive engagement and challenge traditional boundaries between high and low art, abstraction and representation, and spiritual and commercial aspects. He received recognition from the Ontario Arts Council for Visual Culture 2022 and the Canada Council for the Arts for the Arte Laguna Prize 2023.
