About this artwork
Estimated Value: $50 This drawing is a recreation of “Lovers II” by Renee Magritte (1928) and discusses the struggles of being a queer person in Islam, particularly in countries governed under Sharia law. Under these circumstances, LGBTQ+ folks cannot freely express themselves and must operate under a great deal of fear and secrecy. In extreme cases, the consequences can be life-threatening. Here, the viewer is called to reflect on how external governing factors such as religion, culture and environment shape an individual’s experience through space.
