About this artwork
This is an isometric view of the front facade of Deer Park Presbyterian Church in Toronto. It has been converted into a condominium, but this facade remains. I used the floor plan to figure out the likely geometric proportioning scheme, which turned out to be consistent with the Ad Quadratum scheme commonly used as a base. From there I was able to develop a geometric structure that pointed to every major feature of the facade. This allowed me to draw interrelated shapes to frame the building on the page, then draw the building out of it. The remainder of the geometric framing can be seen around the finished building. I added shadows using projection techniques, in order to give the building a sense of depth. Finally I rendered it in ink with the objective of making it look realistic.

About the artist
My current body of work, called Toronto Gothic, is a memorial for my father and an homage to Toronto’s rich collection of Gothic Revival architecture. My dad was a draftsman, and to keep his spirit close to me I’ve been learning manual drafting methods and applying them toward drawing images of Gothic Revival buildings in the city from angles they’ve not been photographed from and without any obstructions to the view. I detail them in ink with the objective of achieving as much realism as possible.
