About this artwork
Heather Goodchild’s art practice is split between the mythical and the mundane, creating an exciting tension between real life and fantasy, and how the two worlds intersect. “Basement Cafeteria,” depicts an everyday scene of people eating in a cafeteria. On closer inspection, mini-worlds and narratives unfold. Is the woman in an apron crying? What is the man in the corner working on? Goodchild aptly captures the questions of everyday life, through a snapshot of strangers, in this intimate painting. Oil on board
