About this artwork
This is a two-sided work on a transparent mylar sheet. It is meant to speak to the two sides of any conflict or story. In this case it has one side in colors original to the Islamic designs used, and the other side has Islamic designs where the original colors are replaced with the red, white, and blue of the US flag. It evokes the ideas of colonialism and of the Islamic diaspora, and seeks to find a harmonious balance between the two cultures. It is also meant to spotlight the fact that those in the US from Islamic cultures should not be marginalized by highlighting some of the beauty and rigor of Islamic design.

About the artist
I make work to heal myself and others. I am primarily a painter whose goal is to universalize common experiences of dysfunction and unease in order to heal them. Specifically I make psychological portraits of friends and family members, socially engaged artworks, and compositions of designs from marginalized cultures that position them as first-class US citizens. I have an MFA from UNC-Greensboro, and I live and work in Nashville, Tennessee. I have exhibited in Miami, New York, Chicago, and Saõ Paulo. I have also participated in residencies at Skowhegan, The Fine Arts Work Center, Mass MoCA, among others.
