When God created the animals he brought them to man to see what he would call them but he realized that none of these were a convenient help for Adam, God then made man fall into a deep sleep and created woman from his rib. “Adam's sleep” is the continuation of the painting “The birth of Eve”, the moment following the creation of woman. The two figures, Adam and Eve are lying in a pulsating woodland landscape. Nature, having just rejoiced in the creation of Eve, has the opportunity to witness the birth of love between man and woman, and this develops a vibrant joy that spreads among the leaves, blades of grass, flowers up to to touch the sky. This work hails the imminent birth of pure love. Eve's heart begins to beat, her lungs fill with air and her eyes open contemplating God who invites her to turn around noticing Adam still sleeping, his features and the sweetness of his breathing make Eve's heart leap and she spontaneously takes Adam in his arms. Eve remains contemplating the man's face, letting a smile shine through while her hair comes to life for a moment, caressing Adam's face. We therefore find ourselves in front of a scene with multiple meanings, the birth of pure love, the importance of mutual support, even if in this case it is from Eva, while the figure of the man in the woman's arms is a a gesture that anticipates motherhood, the fruit of their union.
