Sophia K. Kim, a Toronto-based visual artist and mother of four, is currently pursuing an MFA at OCAD. She holds a BFA degree with a major in Drawing and Painting and a minor in Illustration from the same school. In her artistic exploration, Sophia delves into the subtle yet profound movements of nature using oil, acrylic, and watercolor. Drawing inspiration from her diverse roles as a former police officer in South Korea and a present stay-at-home mother in Canada, she explores the intersections of societal norms and personal identity. Through intentional observations, Sophia has uncovered diverse life forms, reflecting the regenerative cycles found in both ecosystems and her own life. Mushrooms, serving as symbolic guides, have evolved into metaphors for regeneration, sustainability, and mutualism. Her artistic practice pays homage to unnoticed creatures, capturing the beauty that transcends human intervention. These series of paintings are Sophia’s carefully curated artistic journey, weaving narratives of an artist and an immigrant mother. She invites you to join her in celebrating the lives and desires of unseen beings—forgotten and remembered through vibrant, interconnected strokes on canvas.
