What is a royalty?
A royalty is a fee granted to artists (or their heirs), to serve as compensation on the resale of their works. Artists are typically cut out of subsequent sale proceeds—royalties are an important initiative that provides artists with the financial compensation they deserve.
What is a royalty?
A royalty is a fee granted to artists (or their heirs), to serve as compensation on the resale of their works. Artists are typically cut out of subsequent sale proceeds—royalties are an important initiative that provides artists with the financial compensation they deserve.
Why do artists deserve royalties?
Artists deserve compensation on every sale of their work, not just the first one. In North America (and a number of other regions), visual artists are not paid royalties. In contrast, the United Kingdom and Europe have mandated artist resale rights. Let’s make this fair, globally.
What royalties do you give to artists?
Artist royalties have been a long time coming for the art world. For every secondary market sale, the artist receives 5% of the total sale and their gallery gets 5%. By offering royalties, we are creating a fairer art market for everyone.
What is a digital fingerprint?
Digital fingerprinting —a patent-pending feature— is art authentication that uses your phone’s camera to ensure that the art you receive is authentic and registered as yours—think of it as art provenance for the 21st-century.
How do you ensure digital fingerprints are secure?
Peggy uses patent-pending artificial intelligence engine to create a digital fingerprints of artworks. The digital fingerprint, is used by subsequent collectors and participants to enable them to safely verify that it is the original artwork, tracing the artwork's fingerprint back to the original creator. To ensure fingerprints are safe and secure, Peggy first verifies the identity of the creator of the fingerprint, before the fingerprinting process begins. This safely ensures that the source of the artwork can be trusted and that it is connected to the original creator.
Who can create an artwork digital fingerprint?
An artist, or a representative authorized by the artist, creates the digital fingerprint of their own artwork. The fingerprint is then verified by future collectors.
When collectors upload an artwork of their collection, acquired outside of Peggy. they'll be required
As a collector, why do I need to verify a digital fingerprint?
Digital fingerprinting ensures the art you receive is authentic and registered to you. Every piece of art that passes through Peggy’s virtual doors is authenticated—creating a community built on trust. If you decide to sell, the artwork’s history and legitimacy are never in doubt.
When buying or selling a piece through Peggy we'll ask you to verify the existing digital fingerprint. This is a quick process that uses your smartphone's camera and takes only a few minutes.

How to Create a Digital Fingerprint
Ensure authenticity, ownership, and royalties by fingerprinting your artwork through the Peggy app.
Creating a digital fingerprint for your artwork is essential for authenticating its provenance and securing a royalty whenever the artwork is resold. Our digital fingerprinting technology enables artists—or gallerists representing them—to create unique, verifiable records of their work, ensuring that collectors can trace its history, legitimacy, and ownership. Here’s how you can get started with this feature in Peggy.
Why Digital Fingerprinting?
The digital fingerprint provides a unique “ID” for each artwork, allowing secure tracking of its ownership history. This technology also guarantees a 5% royalty for the artist on every resale of the artwork. Peggy’s app is compatible with most modern smartphones, allowing artists and gallerists to use high-quality smartphone cameras to capture the optical details necessary for fingerprinting.
What Artwork Can Be Fingerprinted?
Currently, digital fingerprints can be created only for two-dimensional, unique works such as:
- Paintings
- Works on paper (before framing with glass)
We cannot yet fingerprint three-dimensional works (e.g., sculptures or textiles) or multiples (e.g., photographs or editions). If your artwork falls into one of these categories, please contact support@peggy.com to discuss our new NFC technology, which may be a suitable alternative.

Watch our step-by-step video tutorial here for detailed guidance on creating a digital fingerprint for your artwork in the Peggy app.
Fingerprinting Irregularly Shaped Artworks
For artworks that aren’t rectangular, such as circular tondo paintings, you’ll need to measure the largest square or rectangular area within the artwork:
- For circular artworks (e.g., a tondo), enter the dimensions of the square located inside the circle and fingerprint within that area.
- For irregular shapes (e.g., a trapezoid), enter the dimensions of the largest rectangle within the shape, then proceed to fingerprint that area.

Sales and Payment
Learn the steps involved when a sale occurs on Peggy and how and when you’ll be paid.
When your artwork sells on Peggy, you can expect a smooth and transparent process from sale to payment. Here’s what you need to know about each stage.
How Sales Work on Peggy
There are two main ways a sale can be triggered:
- Asking Price Met
If you’ve set an asking price and receive an offer that meets or exceeds it, a 24-hour auction countdown will automatically begin. This time window serves two purposes:
- Availability Check: If your artwork is no longer available, please contact us at support@peggy.com so we can assist.
- Offer Opportunity for Interested Collectors: During these 24 hours, any collectors who previously expressed interest will be notified and invited to submit competing offers. If additional offers come in, the timer extends by another 24 hours, ensuring no one misses a chance to bid. When the countdown ends, the artwork will be confirmed as sold to the highest bidder, and Peggy will coordinate the shipping process through our partner ARTA.
- Offers Below the Asking Price or Without an Asking Price
If a collector submits an offer below your set asking price or if no price was listed, you’ll receive a notification. To accept, simply visit your Dashboard and confirm the offer. At this point, the same 24-hour auction countdown will start, allowing other collectors to place competing offers if they wish. Once confirmed, Peggy will initiate the shipping process through ARTA, depending on the options you selected and what the collector prefers.
Throughout the sale process, you can track progress in your Dashboard.
How You’ll Receive Payment
Peggy handles payments securely. Here’s how it works:
- Payout Process:
Peggy collects payment and holds it in escrow until the new buyer authenticates the artwork using Peggy’s digital fingerprinting technology. If the buyer doesn’t complete authentication within five days of receiving the artwork, Peggy will release the payment to you automatically.
- Issues with Payment:
If you encounter any issues with receiving payment, please reach out to support@peggy.com for assistance.
Royalties on Secondary Sales
Peggy’s commitment to artist royalties means that when your artwork is sold on the secondary market within the app, you’ll receive 5% of the sale. We expect most secondary sales to occur years after the initial transaction, but whenever they do, Peggy will ensure you are paid once the artwork is authenticated by the new collector.
Special Note:
For all transactions, Peggy’s commission and credit card fees will be applied.

- Link Your Peggy Profile to Social Media
One of the best ways to drive visibility for your work is to connect your Peggy artist profile to your social media channels, such as your personal website, Instagram, or LinkedIn. To link your Peggy profile, follow these steps:
- Open the Peggy app.
- Go to your profile.
- Click the three dots menu in the upper right corner.

- Spread Out Artwork Publishing
Instead of publishing multiple artworks at once, consider spacing out your posts over time. For example, rather than posting five pieces in a single day, publish one and keep the remaining four in draft mode, releasing them gradually throughout the week. This keeps your profile active and your artwork visible to collectors over time, increasing your exposure with each release.
- Organize Your Work with Pegboards
The Pegboard feature, similar to a Pinterest board, allows you to group your artwork by theme, exhibition, or medium. For example, if you're preparing for an art fair, you can create a Pegboard specifically for the pieces you’ll be showcasing. Pegboards are great for sharing curated sets of your work, and each Pegboard has its own link, making it easy to share with collectors or on social media.
Look for the bookmark icon to pegboard artworks.
- Update Artwork Asking Prices
If you publish artwork but haven’t set an asking price, you can set it later to re-surface your artwork at the top of the activity feed. This feature helps keep your work visible and provides collectors an opportunity to view pieces they may have missed.
By actively engaging with these features, you’re making it easier for collectors to discover your art and deepen their connection to your story. Try out these tips and see how they can enhance your Peggy experience and expand your reach!

For example, rather than posting five pieces in a single day, publish one and keep the remaining four in draft mode, releasing them gradually throughout the week. This keeps your profile active and your artwork visible to collectors over time, increasing your exposure with each release.
- Organize Your Work with Pegboards The Pegboard feature, similar to a Pinterest board, allows you to group your artwork by theme, exhibition, or medium.
- Update Artwork Asking Prices If you publish artwork but haven’t set an asking price, you can set it later to re-surface your artwork at the top of the activity feed. This feature helps keep your work visible and provides collectors an opportunity to view pieces they may have missed. By actively engaging with these features, you’re making it easier for collectors to discover your art and deepen their connection to your story. Try out these tips and see how they can enhance your Peggy experience and expand your reach!

Can I make an offer on an artwork?
You can put an offer on any artwork you see on Peggy. Most galleries and artists list the price of the works that are available, which takes the guesswork out of buying art. If there’s no price listed, feel free to place an offer you think is fair. The gallery or artist then has the option to accept your offer and initiate the sale, starting the countdown timer.
After each offer, 24-hours are added to the clock. This allows other Peggy collectors the opportunity to make an offer so that no one gets left out. Once the final offer has been accepted, the shipping process will begin.
How do I purchase an artwork on Peggy?
Peggy is a community of art lovers where you'll be able to discover and buy art from artists, galleries, or other collectors.
Once you discover a work of art you love, you can easily place an offer following these steps:
- Go to the artwork page and make an offer for your desired amount - you'll be able to make one whether the artwork has an asking price or not.
- Add your payment information and your shipping address so we can provide shipping costs. If there is an origin address available for the artwork, you'll be able to see an estimate for the shipping costs. If there is no origin address, once the seller adds it you will be notified to confirm your offer and shipping quote, at that time you could accept or delete your offer.
- Review your offer in detail and submit your offer - we'll hold a 10% deposit temporarily until the offer is confirmed. If your offer is not accepted, the hold will be released. If you make an offer for an artwork that has no ask price or that is less than the ask, the seller will need to accept the offer first and you'll then be able to review and confirm the offer.
- If your offer is confirmed, a 24-hour auction countdown will begin given opportunity to other collectors to place a competing offer.
- If your auction is won, congratulations! At this point, the 10% hold will be removed from your payment method and you will be charged for the full 100% of your purchase.
- When your artwork is delivered, you'll be able to authenticate the artwork using our digital fingerprinting technology which validates the authenticity and transfers ownership to you. You have 5 days from the moment of the artwork is delivered to complete authentication before the sale is automatically marked as completed.
What fees does Peggy charge me when making an offer?
When making an offer on the primary market for an artwork originating from the artist, Peggy does not charge you any fees for making an offer outside of the artwork, shipping and taxes cost.
If you are buying an artwork from another collector in the secondary market, Peggy will charge the buyer a 25% fee that helps provides a royalty to the artist and galleries and Peggy operations.
Why does the artwork need to be digitally fingerprinted to confirm ownership?
Digital fingerprinting —a patent-pending feature— is an art authentication that uses your phone’s camera to ensure that the art you receive is authentic.
We then register it as yours—think of it as art provenance for the 21st-century. Every piece of art that passes through Peggy’s virtual doors is authenticated and secure. If you decide to sell, the art’s history and legitimacy are never in doubt.
For more information on Peggy's digital fingerprint technology: www.peggy.com/digital-fingerprint
When can I receive my payout?
When you sell an artwork, you'll receive your payout once the new buyer successfully authenticates the artwork through our digital fingerprinting technology.
From the moment an artwork is delivered, buyers have 5 days to complete authentication of the artwork before we automatically mark the sale as completed an initiate payout.
What happens if I can't verify an artwork?
If you cannot verify your artwork, please email us at support@peggy.com.
We'll then provide guidance on how to authenticate your specific artwork.
Why do I need to connect my bank account?
Peggy uses Stripe for payments and financial services across the Peggy platform.
By creating and connecting a Stripe account, you will be able to receive compensation from the sales of artworks. Royalties for artists and galleries are also facilitated via Stripe.
You'll need to connect your bank account in order to publish or resell an artwork.
How can I sell my artwork to other collectors?
Peggy is uniquely positioned to offer the ability to sell and buy art on the same platform. Better yet, artists and galleries receive royalties on every secondary sale.
If you have set an ask price and you receive an offer that is equal to or above the price, an automatic 24-hour auction countdown will initiate, resulting in a winning buyer.
If you did not set an ask price or receive an offer below your ask price, you'll have the ability to accept or decline offers. An auction will not begin if an offer is not accepted. A collector will be able to make an offer on any artwork - whether or not you have set an ask price for your artwork on Peggy.
Once an offer is confirmed, a 24-hour auction countdown will start so other collectors can make offers. After each additional offer, 24-hours are added to the clock. This allows other Peggy collectors the opportunity to make an offer so that no one gets left out.
Once the countdown is over, it will confirm the artwork as sold to the individual with the highest offer and initiate the shipping process with our shipping partner.
You'll receive a payment for the artwork sold once the new buyer receives and authenticates the artwork with a digital fingerprint.
Why do I have to update the location of the artwork?
We require you to update the location of an artwork when setting an ask price so we can accurately calculate the shipping costs for the buyer.
What fees does Peggy charge me for re-sale?
When re-selling an artwork on the secondary market, Peggy does not charge any fees.
Shipping, taxes, and Peggy resale fee will be covered by the buyer.
What are secondary market royalties?
A royalty is a percentage-based payout granted to artists (and/or their heirs), to serve as compensation on the resale of their works. Artists typically do not play a role in subsequent transactions of their artworks and are, therefore, typically cut out of subsequent sale proceeds.
We are creating fairer art market for everyone and it starts by bringing the royalties that artists deserve. Artist royalties have been a long time coming for the art world. We’re happy to take on this cause and make a difference for artists and galleries. For every secondary market sale, the artist gets 5% and their gallery gets 5%.

What are Peggy's Community Guidelines?
Peggy is a place for everyone to enjoy art. We’re committed to fostering a healthy community where each member feels safe and respected. In a commitment to transparency and in the spirit of creating a healthy community, these guidelines outline activity that may lead to interventions such as the removal, limiting, or blocking of accounts. The decision to take such an intervention is not taken lightly and considered on a case-by-case basis.
Respect members of the community.
Community is at the core of Peggy. It’s not the place for hateful activity:
- Do create a community that is inclusive.
- Do not spam, harass, or send unwanted messages to other users.
- Do not discriminate against other members on the basis of race, colour, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, or any other characteristic protected under applicable law.
- Do inform us of any of the above by emailing us at art@peggy.com.
- We do commit to action on the above in the broader Peggy community by enacting interventions, as needed.
- We do commit to create an internal Peggy team that does not tolerate harassment or violence, and which is committed to diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and anti-discrimination.
Adhere to laws, regulations and Terms of Use.
We use applicable laws as a helpful framework for what is not allowed on Peggy. For example:
- Do read the terms of use and privacy policy.
- We do commit to enforcing these.
- Do not use the app for the financing of any illicit activity.
- Do not promote or participate in illegal activities—including activities that incite hate or violence against others.
- Do not use Peggy in a way that violates the Terms of Use of Peggy or associated service providers such as Stripe or Arta Shipping.
- Do inform us if another member of the community is not adhering to the above.
Be who you say you are.
It’s important that members know that they’re dealing with real people:
- Do be your authentic self on Peggy.

- Do not create accounts with false identities for any purpose, such as misleading the community.
- Do not post private contact details of any artist, collector, gallerist, or member.
- Do not upload artworks that don’t belong to you or you don’t have permission to upload.
Engage in art buying and selling with honesty.
Collectors, galleries, and artists agree to sell and buy art with integrity and honesty on Peggy. Peggy is not the place for dishonest activity:
- Do act with integrity and honesty.
- We do commit to acting with the utmost integrity and honesty within the internal Peggy team.
- Do not engage in price manipulation, market manipulation, fraud, or other types of manipulative activity.
- Do not engage in transactions where a favour or advantage is promised or expected in return.
- Do not use automated means to access services or extract data.
- Do not pay artists late, pay artists partially, or underpay artists. Peggy ensures artists get paid.
Express yourself with confidence.
We operate in the art world and encourage our artists to express themselves with confidence:
- Do express yourself. Do be open minded: Sometimes art is made of ideas and images that can be divisive or challenging to digest to some or many. An example of this could be an artwork portraying a naked body or body part. Another example of this could be an artwork portraying images of racism, which raise awareness.
- Do operate with well intentioned intent.
- Do not operate with malicious intent.
- We do welcome all artworks to live in Peggy. In contrast, certain worlds outside Peggy (such as other social media platforms, advertising platforms, or other surfaces) sometimes pose constraints upon what visuals and messages (including artworks) are allowed within their systems.
- We do commit to surfacing all artworks within Peggy.
- We do our best to surface artworks outside Peggy. However, to work within those constraints we may need to advertise non-divisive artworks in hopes that this will grow the Peggy community as a whole, for the benefit of all.
- We do commit to advocating for artwork freedom with the world outside Peggy, including the social media platform, advertising platforms and other platforms we interact with.
