About this artwork
This vibrant and surreal composition draws its title and conceptual roots from Percy Bysshe Shelley’s Ozymandias, a poem that explores the impermanence of human achievements. The fragmented forms—a hand and two feet—emerge from a landscape reminiscent of the American Southwest, evoking the artist’s Yaqui heritage and the deep connection to ancestral lands. These remnants, devoid of a visage, symbolize humanity’s transient presence against the eternal backdrop of time and nature. Above, a radiant sky and an enigmatic halo frame two eyes—one representing the divine, gazing from the heavens, and the other a shattered earthly reflection, placing human ambition beneath God’s supremacy. A script, both illegible and familiar, runs through the composition. Influenced by ancient scripts and the theories of Stanislas Zukalski’s Zermatism, it suggests the universal lineage of humankind and the evolution of artistic expression. The script also nods to the underappreciated beauty of writing systems like traditional Mongolian script, which fascinates the artist for its fluidity and history. Bursting with vivid colors and layered meaning, Shattered Legacy reflects on the inevitability of decay and the fleeting nature of existence. Its surreal elements compel viewers to grapple with the paradox of legacy: the ephemeral moments we cherish today will fade, yet this impermanence holds the key to savoring the now. Life turns to dust, but in its fragility lies its beauty.
