About this artwork
My work is centered on the female role and figure, giving special importance to relationships among women. That said, I pull elements from women’s literature and personal experience to create a sort of symbolic visual language that informs the paintings. The works portray scenes of women in motion interacting with each other, and also incorporate objects related to the texts I study. In this series I focused on two texts: The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan and A Room for One’s Own by Virginia Wolf, from which I concentrated on the themes of self-realization and the undermining of female effort as it pertains to work in the home. I also wanted to point out the importance of support within groups of women and convey a sense of community through compositions that could relate to all women.

About the artist
Born in 1989, Gabriela is a self-taught Venezuelan artist. With a background in design and communications, she holds a BBA degree in Strategic Design & Management from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City. In 2014, Gabriela began her career in art, focusing on painting and illustration with the female figure and role as the main subject. She became involved in cultural and creative protests projects in her hometown Maracaibo and was invited to participate in group shows in Aruba, New York and Spain. In 2016, she held her first solo show “Hijos del Petróleo” from which one piece was selected to participate in the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women anual auction. She currently works and resides in Barcelona, Spain, where she obtained a Postgraduate degree in Museum and Cultural Heritage Management at the Universitat de Catalunya in 2019, and a Master’s degree in Digital Arts Curatorship from ESDi, Universitat Ramon Llull, in 2020. Her practice focuses on portrayals of the female figure and role pointing at the commonalities within their stories to evoke a sense of community. She pulls elements from feminist literature, female historical references, and personal experience to construct a symbolic visual language that informs the paintings, each conceived as imaginary scenes in motion of women engaging with each other. The figures come from memory, and the use of the medium reflects the roughness of the honesty she seeks to convey. As an artist, she looks for approachability and expression with the goal of paying homage to women.
