Operating outside of words and narrative, Lana allows her subconscious to guide her through emotion and impulse as she records the world around her. Working on large canvases, she records the translation of the logic that her eyes and brain are trained on into the sensory realm of emotion and intuition of the body. It becomes a process of improvisation and automation where the only step one knows is the one she is making; the next step is only known once the previous has been completed. Lana relies on her peripheral vision to act as a guide while her body scrambles to keep up the fast-paced movement. It’s a sprint to capture the flood of color, feelings, and senses onto the canvas. In this almost breathless state, she knows she must work at this frenzied pace because these moments of intuitive translation are not sustainable. She recognizes that it’s only a matter of time before she is dominated by logic, a short-circuiting of the unknown. She pushes to give her subconscious control; she seeks to push past the fear and the artificial constraints. She pushes to be free of ego, to fly weightless in the subconscious realm.
