Annie Brito Hodgin is a largely self-taught oil painter who has been studying and maintaining her studio practice for nearly a decade. Hodgin emerges with a powerful body of work that reflects traumas to women from Southern oppression and expectations. Each painting depicting a woman in a moment of crisis, almost like a screenshot from the climax of a suspense movie. Her use of nudity and narration force the viewer contemplate what is happening, what brought this woman to this exact moment. Is she safe? Is she the protector or the protected?
