Elizabeth’s practice reflects a contemporary interpretation of Grotesque Art, which is a combination of ornate human and animal forms interwoven with moresque elements that distort to create bizarre, wild, playful and even obscene images. In the 15th century, Grotesque Art challenged the artistic order and was dismissed as meaningless and illogical. However, Elizabeth Rhona aims to challenge this understanding of Grotesque Art. Elizabeth Rhona’s paintings explore the metamorphosis imagery surrounding women in Grotesque Art, transforming women into hybrid beings of ornate moresque scenes using repeated curved motifs. These motifs take their influence from the classical Flora and Fauna elements in Grotesque Art, this symbolism links nature and flesh, ultimately representing life and decay.
