Benny Bing is a contemporary Canadian artist who explores themes of identity, gender, and Blackness. Being born in Nigeria, Bing has always drawn influence from the pride and beauty in his cultural upbringing. This included paying homage to the matriarchal family structure he came from and can be seen in his art as it focuses on empowering portrayals of Black femininity. His art practice places great emphasis on documenting the Black experience and exploring ideas of beauty, self-love, and at its core, humanity; all while creating an open space encouraging dialogue on gender equality and identity. His work forces the audience to stop, ask questions, and dive deeper beyond pejorative stereotypes. Bing’s work has been a part of notable institutional exhibits including Enduring Ideals: Rockwell, Roosevelt & the Four Freedoms, an exhibit held at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts. His work has also led to cultivating corporate partnerships, working with brands such as Roots, IKEA, The Daniels Corporation, and Giants of Africa. Currently, Bing works out of his studio in Toronto and serves on the Board of Directors at Artscape, a not-for-profit urban development organization that makes space for creativity and transforms communities.
