Oil on panel in antique frame Refashioned is a reimagining of a painting of Louisa Pipkin. This painting echoes the style of Western portraiture, and demonstrates the strength of character that exists within a leader in the community. Here, Mrs. Pipkin is shown wearing clothing that indicates her position without being ostentatious. On her head, Mrs. Pikin wears a head wrap known as a tignon, which was imposed by laws in New Orleans to limit freed Black women from showing their hair in public.
