Obi uses his characters as a vehicle for his self expression, specifically his emotions. Each character created by Obi is a personification of specific emotions and sometimes a combination of stories. Tales of sadness, happiness, and the complex network of emotions in-between is what makes the paintings for Obi. Juxtaposed with the emotional weight of each character is a cartoon like style made to makes these complex emotions digestible for the viewer. Every figure carries a distinct design and familiarity that can feel nostalgic. Obi aims to create work that is deceptively simple, while leaving room for interpretation and self reflection.
